About The Event

The AGSC and APRA AMCOS present a special webinar on BUYOUTS in regards to APRA membership, rights, royalties, opt-in agreements, and the definition of buyouts across different territories and regions. Our expert panel will guide the discussion and answer your questions as we go. Panel speakers include:

BRETT APLIN: Brett is an award-winning screen composer who has scored more than 50 films including features and documentaries, many of them highly acclaimed and awarded internationally, co-composed over 26 hours of television drama, and co-composed over 43 hours of  children’s television across 4 series and short films. He started his career winning the annual Pete Carpenter Fellowship (BMI Foundation NYC) and traveled to Los Angeles to work with Emmy and Grammy award-winning television composer Mike Post, composing music for Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

His music has been heard locally on ABC1, SBS, Network Ten, Channel 7, STAN  and internationally on BBC, National Geographic, Animal Planet, The  History Channel, ZDF, Discovery, Netflix, Nickelodeon and many many  more. He won ‘Feature Film Score of the Year’ and ‘Best Soundtrack Album’ at the 2018 APRA Screen Music Awards His recent credits include The Gloaming, and Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries.  in collaboration with Dmitri Golokov and Burkhard Dallwitz.

He has been nominated for nine APRA Australian Screen Music Awards, winning ‘Best Music for a Documentary’ for Tiger Dynasty (2012) and ‘Best Music for a Short Film’ for Lucy Wants to Kill Herself (2009). I have also been awarded an Australian Film Institute (now AACTA) Award for my work on Rare Chicken Rescuein 2008, received an AFI nomination for my contribution to the acclaimed documentary A Thousand Encores: The Ballet Russes in Australia in 2010, and an AACTA nomination for James Cameron's Deep Sea Challenge 3D  in 2014.

KATE HADDOCK: Lawyer Kate Haddock has over 25 years experience advising copyright collecting  societies and the publishing industries in relation to all aspects of  enforcement, rate setting, regulation and commercialisation. Kate  advises the music and book publishing industries on licensing structures  and copyright management, and has extensive experience in dispute  resolution and copyright litigation in the Federal Court of Australia  and the Copyright Tribunal of Australia. 

Kate has acted in numerous key  copyright proceedings, and in authorisation and notification proceedings  before the ACCC and the Australian Competition Tribunal. Kate was a founding partner of the Banki Haddock Fiora partnership in 1995.

Kate  has served as a director and board member of several companies and  provides advice to boards in relation to directors’ duties. She is Chair  of the Australian Copyright Council. Kate has been listed in the  Australian Financial Review’s Top 200 Lawyers in Australia (Intellectual  Property) since 2009.

Kate has acted as an external lawyer for APRA for more than thirty years, and for AMCOS for more than twenty. She works closely with the APRA AMCOS in house legal team on matters including Copyright Tribunal proceedings and the APRA ACCC authorisations. She is very familiar with the issues surrounding buy outs for APRA AMCOS members.

CATHERINE JOY: LA-based Australian-born screen composer Catherine Joy is the President for the Alliance for Women Film Composers and a composer for film, media and live performance.  She recently scored the documentary Naughty Books (Hulu)  resulting in an ASCAP Composers Choice Award nomination. Her latest feature, Potato Dreams of America. had its world premiere at SXSW 2021 and she won Best Documentary Score for the uplifting feature documentary Gold Balls.

Catherine has scored a number of series, starting with Capitol Hill which began on youtube and then was televised throughout Canada and Europe. She also scored the dramedies Abby and Tabby alone in the Desert and No Matter What. She is currently  co-scoring the E-Line Media / BBC Studios ocean exploration video game Beyond Blue.

 

CAITLIN YEO: Moderator Caitlin is an acclaimed, multi-award-winning screen composer. She composed the music for Kriv Stender’s epic Vietnam war feature Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan and collaborated with Amanda Brown on the Slow TV documentary The Chocolate Factory for Mint Pictures/SBS TV.

She also recently scored Sally Aitken’s feature documentary Playing With Sharks (premiered at Sundance in competition in February 2021) and highly anticipated ABC  TV drama series Wakefield.   She also scored multiple feature films, including critically acclaimed The Rocket, cult classic All My Friends are Leaving Brisbane and Standing Up for Sunny. Her documentary work is vast including, Foxtel series, The Pacific in the Wake of Captain Cook with Sam Neill, David Stratton: A Cinematic Life,  Bomb Harvest, For The Love of MeatAfter The Apology,  and ABC TV series The House with Annabel Crabb.

Her score for Priscilla Cameron’s The Butterfly Tree was awarded ‘Feature Film Score of the Year’ and ‘Best Soundtrack Album’ at the 2018 APRA Screen Music Awards. Her work on Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan won ‘Best Original Score’ at the 2019 FCCA Awards.

Caitlin Yeo has received a swathe of accolades including five APRA Screen Music Awards including Feature Score of the Year for The Rocket (2013), and Best Music for a Documentary for Getting Frank Gehry (2016), Bomb Harvest (2007) and The Butterfly Tree (above); five AACTA nominations, a 2017 Ozflix Award for Best Music, and two Film Critics Circle Awards. In 2011, Caitlin was also awarded the APRA  Professional Development Award, which led to a spot at the  prestigious ASCAP Film and TV Scoring Workshop in Los Angeles.

Caitlin is currently working on Goalpost/SBS revisionist western New Gold Mountain, directed by Corrie Chen.
